Joi was born in Florence, South Carolina, and currently lives in Myrtle Beach. Joi shares a family farm on the Little Pee River in Dillon County which her family has enjoyed for nearly a century. She loves to spend time there with her family near the river, fields, and pecan groves. Fishing is also a beloved family activity. Her daughter attends school in Puerto Rico, and Joi cherishes visiting her. Like many others in the local area, she and her family enjoy the beach, shopping, and dining out. Joi’s family also includes their pets. She said she thought she was always a dog person until they got two cats, “Now I am both a dog and a cat lover!”

Joi received her Bachelor of Arts from Converse College in English and Humanities. She received her Juris Doctorate from the University of South Carolina School of Law.

Joi always wanted to be an attorney from a young age. She did not come from a family of attorneys. Her dad worked for a corporation, and her mom was a homemaker. Joi’s choice to study law capitalized on her love of oral communication, reading, writing, and her genuine love of community. Joi practices law to assist people through troubling and challenging times. In her practice, Joi encourages people to overcome difficulties, see the best in their circumstances, and see possibilities where they thought none existed. Joi enjoys using her skills as an experienced trial attorney, a successful negotiator, and a former judge to enhance clients’ experiences navigating the uncertainties of the legal system. Throughout her career, Joi has capitalized on her persistence and her communication and negotiation skills.

Joi has spent her career in public service for the people of the Coastal and Pee Dee regions of South Carolina. Initially, she prosecuted for the South Carolina Department of Social Services Office of Child Support Enforcement. Then, she continued her public service as a Senior Solicitor for Family Court at the Fifteenth Judicial Circuit Solicitor’s Office in Conway, South Carolina. Next appointed as the Assistant City Attorney for the City of Myrtle Beach, she advised the City Council and staff, litigated administrative cases and prosecuted as the Senior Prosecutor. Immediately before joining Indigo Family Law, Joi served as the Chief Municipal Judge for the City of Myrtle Beach.

When asked why she joined the Indigo family she replied, “Indigo Family Law is the natural choice for me to best utilize my legal skills and personal talents. I share the values here. I stand for the message that the firm expresses, families first. I have experienced separation and divorce.  I try to see the glass as half full rather than half empty. That is certainly the philosophy here at Indigo Family Law. Sharing that feeling of optimism with clients is the quintessential reason that I chose this firm.”

One quote that has always stuck with Joi is one from Amelia Earhart which is, “The most difficult thing is the decision to act, the rest is merely tenacity.”
